Diesel Engine Chips

Diesel Engine Chips Are High Tech Power Boosters

Diesel Engine Chips

To the uninitiated, diesel engine chips might sound like something truck drivers snack on while driving cross country, or maybe some sort of disc shaped soluble additive one would add to diesel fuel. But neither of these ideas is anywhere near the truth! A diesel chip is an electronic device you can install into your car's computer for more power and better gas mileage.

Everyone knows modern cars have a computerized "brain" that controls the internal workings of the car. Diesel cars and pickups are no exception. This brain, called an ECU, or Electronic Control Unit, controls such things as the fuel and air ratio. Adding a performance chip helps the engine work at a higher level while still keeping fuel consumption low.

In other words, adding a diesel engine chip is a little like buying memory for your computer. There are a number of companies producing these products for American made pickups, like Dodge, Ford, and GMC. In Europe, you can get chips for diesel cars, such as those made by Renault, Volvo, Mercedes, and others.

Diesel engine chips cost a few hundred dollars, but adding one to your pickup can increase it by as much as 130 horsepower and 180 foot-pounds of torque. Some mechanics recommend paying attention to the vehicle's exhaust system when increasing power, because the system can get too hot because of the extra power. They say that being sure of good air flow is the first step to increasing power.

Banks Engineering is one company that makes performance chips for trucks. An example of one of their products is the OttoMind6. This device is designed to help a work truck deliver better performance. It tunes pulse width, timing, and fuel pressure. It can add up to 170 foot-pounds to the rear wheels. It has built in safeguards that adjust power so it suits the conditions.

An available model of the OttoMind6 can be used on 2006 or 2007 Chevrolet and GMC trucks that have 6.6 liter v-8 engines. Retail price of this chip is $769.77.

Bully Dog Technologies is another company that makes performance products for vehicles. These products can help you tow with more power, or increase your speed over a short distance. In addition to products for Dodge, Ford, and GM trucks, they also make performance modules for diesel Volkswagen cars. A module for a 1997 to 2003 Volkswagen TDI increases the power by 25 horsepower and 35 foot-pounds. Price for this product is $566.16.

Edge Products make engine chips for GM, Dodge, Ford, and Jeep vehicles as well as for RVs and Motorhomes. A representative product from Edge is the EZ Trail Jammer Plug-In Module for a 2005 to 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD with a 2.8 liter L4 Diesel engine. This product adds 25 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque.

The Trail Jammer allows you to control power levels simply while inside your vehicle. You can get extra power for towing. It costs $499 retail and is easy to install. For adding power to a diesel vehicle, the wide variety of diesel engine chips are a real advantage.
