Choosing A New Gas Tank: Jeep Parts And Supplies

Gas Tank Jeep

With all the damage that happens to the gas tank, Jeep owners who use their rigs a lot often find themselves needing a replacement. Jeep gas tanks are available in different materials, including aluminum, steel, and plastic. You can find one that will work on any year of Jeep from 1941 to the present.

Warrior Products makes a good looking aluminum Jeep gas tank cover. These have a diamond texture and are polished so that they look just like chrome. Because they are made of #3003 Aluminum Treadbrite, however, they will not peel, flake, or rust. To order one, you need to know your model and year as well as the size of your gas tank, because some Jeeps have 15 gallon tanks while others have 20 gallon tanks.

For instance, for a 97 or newer TJ Wrangler with a 20 gallon tank, you would need model number WAR916GTC20. It costs about $180. For an older (1987 to 1986) CJ7 or Wrangler, you would need model number WAR907GTC20, which costs about $162. Fifteen gallon tank covers are available for Jeeps, too. The cover for a 1987 to 1996 Wrangler is model number WAR907GTC and it costs about $140.

You can also choose to upgrade to an MTS polyethylene military grade gas tank for your Jeep. Because they have no seams or welds, they are not weak anywhere, and they will not rust either. They will not crack no matter how cold the temperature gets. At 1/4 inch thick, they are tough and long-lasting, and easy to install. Some come with skid plate extensions. A 15 gallon tank (part number 0051) for a 1978 to 1986 Jeep CJ runs about $140. A 21 gallon tank (part number 0050XL or 0051XL) with skid extensions costs about $250.

Tomken produces some of the best skid plates you can get for protecting your Jeep gas tank in any kind of rugged terrain. For a 1997-2006 TJ, a skid plate will cost $181.95. It's made from steel plate, an eighth of an inch thick and boxed in all around. They have holes drilled for draining out water, too, and are virtually indestructible. XJ and YJ styles are the same price and have the same features.

Another company that makes Jeep gas tank skid plates is cleverly named Skid Row. Their skids are made from 3/16 inch powder coated steel on bottom and sides. They bolt on for easy installation. Sample price is about $245 for a gas tank skid plate for a 1984 to 1986 Jeep Cherokee.

Some other companies that make skid plates for a Jeep gas tank are Gen-Right, Omix-Ada, Warrior, and Warn. Whichever manufacturer you choose, your tank will be protected when you hit the trails.

Some do-it-yourselfers have found ways to convert their 15 gallon Jeep gas tank to a 20 gallon tank. Some even have found ways to add an extra gas tank or build their own tank. You can find links to a variety of articles about modifying Jeeps on the 4-Wheel Drive/Offroading topic at About.com
